Boules Analysis

Welcome to our page or comparative analyzes of petanque boules specially designed to help you make an informed choice when purchasing them.
As we explain in our "Choose your Boules Wisely" page, it is crucial to understand that throwing technique is the most determining factor in your results on the field, much more than the boules themselves. However, to optimize your performance, it is important to choose a boule adapted to your specific needs.
It should be noted that a more expensive boule is not necessarily the best option for you. Each model offers different features, and our comparison tables are designed to guide you towards the most appropriate choice.
While you may have a preference for shooting or pointing, we highly recommend opting for versatility. Indeed, during a game, you will often have to alternate between these two techniques. Our analyzes take this reality into account and will help you find the right balance.
Explore our tables to discover the nuances between the different models and find the boule that best suits your style of play and your aspirations.
Analysis Criteria

Behavior
At Pointing
• Balancing the boule.
• The response on the field (rebound and grip).
• An additional half point is awarded to striated boules (or boules with a deep engraving), because they provide better grip, thus maximizing spin.
Notes :
The boule must be thrown with good spin so that the grooves are effective upon impact on the field.
Semi-soft boules generally react better on all types of field.

Behavior
At Shooting
• The recoil of the boule after a direct hit.
• An additional half point is awarded to smooth boules, because they allow a fluid hand release and an impact on the ground without snagging.
• The tenderness of the boule and the different technologies, such as the Anti-rebound Technology from MS Pétanque or the Impact Absorber from Obut.
Note :
Regarding the behavior of the boule after impact when shooting, it is important to note that both the arc of the throw and the backspin applied with the wrist will significantly influence this recoil effect. A more curved trajectory combined with backspin tends to produce a more pronounced backward movement upon impact.
As mentioned in our "Choose your Boules Wisely" page, it is important to remember that many shooters prefer to use a semi-soft boule. This type of boule tends to lose less speed upon impact with the ground, compared to a soft boule. The latter, on the other hand, will tend to have a better reaction to a direct shot.

Wear
• Its resistance to impacts.
• Its resistance to wear and preservation of playing qualities.
• The durability of grooves and engraving (Impact of their depth and problems linked to aging.)
Notes :
At equal hardness, stainless steel (inox) boules are generally more impact resistant than carbon steel boules.
Regarding hardness, it is important to know that a 120 kg/mm² model from one manufacturer may be less resistant than a model of the same hardness from another manufacturer.

Grip in Hand
• The grip and sensation felt after 6 months of wear. (Roughness or satin appearance)
• The depth of the grooves or engravings, allowing additional grip when they are pronounced.
• The type of steel and the finish of the boule + the texture.
Notes :
New boules, particularly stainless steel ones, can be very slippery. This is why our rating regarding grip in hand is based on regular use for 6 months, allowing for natural wear and tear.
Manufacturers use around twenty different grades of steel, the exact compositions of which are confidential. For each model, the steel recipe is unique, resulting in varied finishes and textures. This diversity results in a different grip in hand for each model and each manufacturer .
Several factors can influence the wear and grip of the boules : the type of field on which we play, the storage conditions and maintenance of the boules, as well as the acidity secreted by the players' hands. It is important to note that poor grip in the hand is not necessarily a fault. Preferences vary between players. Our review aims to guide you towards a product that matches your personal preferences.
The engraving on the boules from the MS Pétanque company are relatively deep and can act as grooves. By choosing one of their smooth models (MS 120, MS Acier, MS Inox, LSX or even the L'IT), the player benefits from the best of both worlds. Much of the boule is textureless, facilitating smooth hand release when shooting. However, if the player is looking for additional grip to maximize an effect, they have the option of placing their fingertips on the engraving to achieve optimal grip. This design thus offers appreciable versatility, adapting to different playing techniques and player preferences.

FOR POINTER
For pointers, we suggest opting for a semi-soft striated boule. You can refer to the "Polyvalent (Striated)" section.
By choosing this type of boule, you are choosing a polyvalent product that will accompany you in all playing situations. In addition, it has the advantage of wearing out less quickly while maintaining its balance.
