Les boules de plus de 730 grammes : ce qu'il faut savoir

Petanque boules over 730 grams : what you need to know

We regularly receive requests for what we consider "heavy" boules — those weighing more than 730 grams (typically 740 to 800 grams). While weight selection is a matter of personal preference, we felt it was important to share a few clarifications on the topic.

For those looking for more general guidance when choosing their boules, feel free to visit our Choose Your Boule Wisely page — builded to help you based on your playing style, position on the field, and much more.

A trend toward lighter boules

For several years now, most manufacturers have stopped producing boules over 730 g (740 to 800 g), as demand has become very limited. Today, the general trend— among both beginners and experienced players — is to favor lighter boules, typically between 680 and 700 grams.

Why this shift? Because petanque is a game of precision, often played at distances of up to 10 meters — or even more if the jack is moved during the round. Using a heavier boule at these distances requires extra effort from the arm, which can affect the smoothness of the throw ... and ultimately, accuracy.

Just like in sports such as golf, a smooth and natural motion tends to deliver the best results. Forcing the throw, on the other hand, can reduce control and lead to quicker fatigue in the arm and shoulder — ultimately affecting your performance as the game goes on.

Which models are still available ?

Among the manufacturers we distribute, only the Obut brand still offers certain models weighing over 730 g (from 740 to 800 g). However, these boules are only available in a smooth version (without grooves).

Soft models (faster wear) :

TON'R Strie 0 / Carbon Steel

SOLEIL Strie 0 / Stainless Steel (inox)

Semi-soft models (better durability) :

CX COU Strie 0 / Carbon Steel

ATX Strie 0 / Stainless Steel (inox)

These boules are not kept in inventory as they are rarely requested.

A special order ... with conditions

Boules over 730g (740 to 800g) are subject to a special order. This means that :

• The order must be paid in full in advance.

• There is no possibility of cancellation or return, except in the case of a manufacturing defect.

• This policy is intended to prevent us from being left with boules that are very difficult, if not impossible, to resell if the customer changes their mind.
